i like your face, you want egyptian husband?
i don’t think the majority of people in the middle east dislike americans, but it is true that some do see us as walking wallets. which is understandable as a meal here costs at a one of the most up market restaurants in cairo cost me $27 (incl tax and tip) for: a cold mezze - seasoned tomatoes, an entree - molokhia and chicken, dessert - orange konafa with clotted cream and syrup and a...

dan: i can't believe you like anchovies.
andrew: yeah! they're so good.
dan: yeah. but they really aren't.
I have a standing resolutions not to reference this american life in conversations. I always break it though. It always seemed like something very important to contribute to the conversation until I hear my voice say “there is an episode of this american life….” immediate regret.
I guess it is like telling people about your dreams or drunk antics.
Camel Tour →
There are actually people who go on multi-day camel tours? Kinda blows my mind. I am not sure I even want to camp in the Sahara for one night because I am afraid of not being able to sleep due to temperature and bedding discomfort. Ride a camel for 12 days! Slowest moving tour ever. And what if the camel gets sick and dies?
heather: you have to have all the things you can't get in egypt!
me: well i've been eating a lot of pork and drinking a lot of alcohol so i think that's a good start

what to do
next wednesday i arrive in cairo and on sunday i meet up with the abydos crew. my original plan was to fly to dubai in the interim, but since the specific dates weren’t confirmed until recently i haven’t booked and the airfare has increased from the $300 range to the $440 range, plus hotel and food - starts to sound like an expensive 3 days. my renewed research efforts have yielded 2...

i try to not react to anything regarding sarah palin but find it very difficult. she is and maybe forever will be extremely disturbing. i mean, the woman quit the job she was elected to so that she could work for a tv station and do $100,000 public appearances. and somehow she...

it is admittedly obsessive and unnecessary for me to worry about the education of my unborn children, but hey that’s what i do. i couldn’t read til ate in 3rd grade (dyslexic) but was lucky to be in a school that customized the education of each child instead of holding us back grades or putting us in remedial classes. also we had access an amazing art program and drama program. for...
in case i forgot
i watched 3 documentaries tonight, one about military intervention under the guise of drug war in colombia, the second about genetically modified food, and the third about world water wars. we’re screwed.
yikes. i was trying to distract myself from pre-trip stress but now i’m just depressed (and distracted, so not a total failure).
we’re both smart-alecky loners with goofy projects and weird equipment
